57 minutes. Produced in 2011. Video preview below

The Beartooth Mountains of Montana are one of the most rugged and isolated regions in the western United States. The wilderness area is a massive 500 thousand acres. The Beartooth Mountains are home to Montana's highest mountain – Granite Peak, which stands out at an impressive 12,803 feet. Granite Peak is a favorite of high pointers because it is one of the most difficult mountains to summit in the lower 48 states.

This program is a guide to hiking a relatively unknown route through the Beartooth Mountains to Granite Peak. In this video, you will find out where the Beartooth Mountains - and Granite Peak - are located, how to get to the trail head, and which route to take. Extensive use of topo maps, 3-D graphic aerial fly overs, and place names will help you find the way through this isolated area. Intermixed with route finding information will be video samples that show all the different sections of the hike. This will give you a good idea on what to expect in this area, and also give you a sample of some of the beautiful scenery that can be found in this wilderness.

Also included are a number of extras: alternate routes to Granite Peak, clips of the scenery set to music, a video slide show, and short scenes of Yellowstone and the Tetons. Also included on this disc are a number of useful data files that can be accessed via a computer or laptop. These include:

  • Google Earth .klm tours - Files you can open in Google Earth which will take you right to named locations in the Beartooth Mountains. The files include the route and a tour, which fly you along the route just like in the video.
  • GPX files for GPS - These are .gpx files which can be uploaded to a GPS so you can have the route to Granite Peak right at your finger tips during your hike.
  • Downloadable video Flyover files for loading on a smart phone or tablet.
  • Topographic maps with routes marked.
  • Over 400 photographs with a trip report.
  • A Power Point slide show.
